UK Printing Firms put Environmental Aspirations on hold

Earlier this year, PrintWeek conducted a survey amongst leading printing firms, and identified a disparity between the environmental targets set by printing companies and their achievements.

In 2010, 21.9% of firms said that they were aiming to achieve ISO 14001 accreditation in order to demonstrate good environmental performance. In 2011, the figures showed only a 10% rise in the number of firms holding ISO 14001 accreditation (from 40% to 50%).

‘Carbon Neutral’ was another topic discussed in the survey. In 2010 it was predicted that print companies with carbon neutral status would rise from 6.3% to 13%. Although there was rise during 2010, up to 9.3%, it still fell short of predicted levels. However, carbon neutrality still remains a key aspiration of many printing firms, with a further 13.6% of companies pledging to reduce and offset emissions during 2011.

The report concluded that, during times of economic hardship, printing firms cut back on environmental goals and/or focused their efforts into other areas. It remains to be seen whether companies maintain and build upon their commitment to the environment throughout 2011 and into 2012.
