Travel details, including travel methods, vehicle type and distance, was collected by Shining Earth™ following the issue of an electronic questionnaire sent to all attendees of the Conference.
Guidance values contained within the latest UK DEFRA Greenhouse Gas Conversion Factors document were used to calculate the total emissions associated with the data collected, and using these values it was estimated that approximately 73.3 tonnes of CO2 were associated with travel to and from the Conference.
The results found that 97.93% of the calculated CO2 emissions were associated with emissions from flights, including domestic, short haul and long haul flights. However this was expected given that over 80% of attendees travelled part, or all, of their journey to the Conference by air travel.
In addition, due to the range of distances travelled by attendees, long haul flights were found to be responsible for the largest percentage of air travel emissions, at over 57%. In contrast, only 1.95% of the calculated CO2 emissions were found to be associated with road transport, including cars, taxis and public transport, whilst the remaining 0.12% of emissions were associated with train journeys.
The total calculated emissions have been 100% offset by Inogen and, as such, all attendee travel to and from the Boston WorldView® Conference can be classified as carbon neutral. The CO2 emissions have been offset using a combination of verified emission reduction credits for international renewable energy and methane capture projects. These projects include the construction of hydro power stations in the Guizhou province of China, which will displace electricity generated by the current coal-fired power stations, and the capture of methane from the Meihe coal mine in the Jilin province of China, which will be used to generate electricity for the Northeast China Grid. Both projects have been verified to the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS).
