Newark Showground

Shining Earth®, the sustainability division of Delta-Simons, was appointed by the Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society, to undertake an Environmental Stewardship Appraisal (ESA) of the 120acre Newark Showground site, including the 11 purpose-built halls and buildings on the site, to identify short term low cost/ no cost opportunities to improve resource efficiency, to reduce operational running costs and set longer term sustainability goals.

Following on from this, Shining Earth® formed a strategic partnership with Newark Showground to work with the Showground to assist in the implementation of the recommendations made in the ESA.

Outline Scope of Works

The ESA provided a detailed evaluation of the Showground’s energy consumption, building efficiency, the site’s carbon footprint (relating to electricity, LPG and gas oil consumption and the showground’s owned vehicles), waste management practices, water consumption & waste water discharge (sewage), habitat potential and site ecology, environmental policies and management systems and longer term master planning & renewable energy potential. The study also included an assessment of business cases for sustainable development, corporate responsibility, PR & marketing opportunities, and grants and funding opportunities.

Outcome/Client Benefits

The appraisal undertaken by Shining Earth® provided the Showground’s leadership with a prioritised series of no cost / low cost initiatives with identified investment payback periods which the Showground could implement to reduce running costs and improve environmental performance.  In addition a wide range of longer term ecology / habitat, corporate responsibility and master planning opportunities were identified.

Since the initial study the showground has already begun to implement recommendations in the report including improvements to the thermal efficiency of buildings, improved usage of natural light to reduce electricity consumption and new sustainable water supply. It is also implementing a programme of longer term initiatives identified by Shining Earth® relating to improved heating efficiency and more efficient lighting options and is planning to install groundwater abstraction wells to further reduce use of potable water supply to the site.

Shining Earth® continues to support the Showground with its prioritisation and execution of sustainability initiatives, whilst keeping it abreast of funding opportunities and financial incentives relating to improved resource efficiencies and advancements in technology which help influence the direction of its continued investment in sustainability at the site.

Client Testimonial

“I write to thank you and your team most sincerely for a first class report. I am very conscious of the massive amount of effort that has gone into this work. That we have been given such a comprehensive report covering every aspect that I could think of, gives us a clear base from which to work.”
